The Power of Multiculturality, a Tool to Craft Successful and Scalable Services

04:30

-

04:45

EST

This talk will focus on the importance of understanding the cultures we are designing for in order to craft impactful and relevant services. I will also explain the relevance of gathering insights from various cultural perspectives to avoid biases and foster success in multicultural design teams.

Speaker Bio

Hello, I'm Oona, a globe-trotter Service Designer and User Researcher with experience in six countries across Europe, Africa, and North America. This global exposure has given me valuable insights into how culture influences our interactions with products and services. In today's landscape, we rarely design for a single culture anymore, and this keeps fueling my desire to research and understand the multicultural subtleties we must take into account when crafting services. I'm always eager to broaden my knowledge and discuss these topics. Feel free to check some of my work and let's connect!

Lead Meaningful Cultures

04:30

-

04:45

EST

Make Meaningful Work defines culture as "the interactions, relationships and behaviours between people to take healthy action". It is how we feel and how we make others feel in and around the delivery, process, tools, methodologies and outputs of work. The problem for people at work is that often cultures feel vague or imposed upon people at work by others through words like "values" where often people don't always know what the words mean, or how to discuss, confront problems in cultures at work or positively influence or improve it. We simply do not know how to Lead Meaningful Cultures. This session will demonstrate how you can more positively influence cultures and the people working in it by applying a tool that myself and Josephine Wong (co-founder in Make Meaningful Work) invented called "Practice Spotting (tm)" to more explicitly Make Meaningful Work together. "Practice Spotting(tm)" is "The Key" to help individuals and teams address the gap between feeling sleepwalking or engaged in your work, and to "Take Responsibility to Insert Meaning into Moments that Matter".

Speaker Bio

Dan is a co-founder and principal at Apogee and co-founder of Make Meaningful Work, as well as the co-founder of UX Hong Kong. He has been involved in the UX field for over 25 years, and has been based in Hong Kong for over 20 years. Dan has lectured about user-centered design globally. He has co-authored three books including Global UX with Whitney Quesenbery, the Usability Kit with Gerry Gaffney and Make Meaningful Work with Josephine Wong.

Empowering Service Design with Behavioral Science

04:30

-

04:45

EST

The 21st century faces some of the greatest challenges in our human history, from global warming, technological disruptions, to aging society and the recent pandemic. While these complex global issues are all unique in their own way, the one common thing shared across them is the people. This talk will deep dive into the world of behavioral science, an emerging field that has been gaining global recognition in recent years for its impact towards supporting government policies and tackling world’s toughest challenges. By the end of the talk, the audience will understand the fundamentals of what behavioral science is, and how it can be used to empower service design to make a positive impact in our society. Real-world case studies of applied behavioral science will be discussed across people, organizational, and societal levels to showcase the potential of behavioral science in creating positive behavioral change and sustainable impact to the world.

Speaker Bio

Collaboration practices that align stakeholders with UX teams is critical. Service Design is fundamentally cross-functional and multi-disciplinary and requires lots of collaboration. Why this matters: Internal stakeholders and senior managers can crush a UX or Service Design effort. Worse, if they do not deeply understand UX and Service Design value, they can create cultural patterns that reverse UX gains. An example is having UX focus on Visual Design or primarily supporting technical delivery. Workshop topics: Defining stakeholders & stakeholder personas, Mapping stakeholder influence, Biggest stakeholder problems and confusion, Stakeholder engagement guidelines and boundaries, How to organisationally engage stakeholders for Service Design Transformation.

Speaker Bio

Frank Spillers, MS, is founder of Experience Dynamics, a leading UX and Service Design consultancy. Frank is one of the world’s most in-demand UX consultants. He’s an Inclusive Design evangelist, and expert in Accessibility, Emotion Design, VR/AR, Cross-cultural Design and UX Management. Frank brings 25 years experience as a Sr UX Director and Service Design leader. He has lifted conversion rates by 88% and enhanced revenue by 300% for firms like Nike, Intel, Microsoft, City of New York, Johnson and Johnson, Global Disability Rights Now!, Four Seasons, Capital One, World Bank, Women Enabled International, and many more.

"Infinite Threats: What Can Criminology Teach Us About Service Design?"

This session proposes a novel integration of two seemingly disparate realms – criminology and service design – to uncover hidden insights that can assist in the creation of safer, more secure, and user-centred services. Employing a Design Out Crime approach allows us to strategically address crime and security concerns at the project's outset, contemplating how services, systems, and products might be susceptible to misuse and abuse. Wear your optimistic service design hat and embrace my pessimistic criminology perspective as we collaboratively explore the potential for developing new tools and frameworks.

Speaker Bio

Ginevra is a criminologist by training, a communication specialist by background, an avid volunteer by passion, and an aspiring social designer. With experience in communication, event management, community building, and organisational development in the UK, Ghana, and Belgium, she possesses a keen appreciation for marketing's pivotal role in the success of design projects. She is excited to speak at SDN NGC24 because, as Locard's principle of the crime scene goes, "every contact leaves a trace" and she looks forward to making contacts and sharing and receiving knowledge, tools, and resources.

Experiences with complicated healthcare systems can be sensitive, and directly engaging stakeholders about them can be disruptive or distressing. How might we then design with sensitive topics while ensuring our research methods don’t negatively impact stakeholders along the way? Maia shares about her service design thesis project, which explores patients and their companions’ struggles when seeking financial support for medical expenses in the Philippines, her thoughts on designing by ethics, and how she used her country’s strong social media behavior as an insightful, non-invasive method for user research.

Speaker Bio

Maia’s involvement in public healthcare began with providing psychosocial support to pediatric patients for 4 years, as part of a local volunteer organization. With a background in design and development, she’s worked as an information designer in the sustainability sector and as a user researcher for social impact- and public health-focused design projects in the Philippines. She’s now based in Switzerland, where she completes her service design master’s degree and explores how the discipline engages with public service and health sector issues. She sees her research and service design practice as an opportunity to redistribute power, support service providers on the field, and materialize dignified day-to-day experiences.

Co-Design: A Sitcom of Collaboration?

04:30

04:45

In recent years, co-design has emerged as an increasingly popular methodology and practice to drive social change and transformation. While co-design seeks to democratize our design practices in service of community engagement and increased collaboration, it often ends up reinforcing the centralization of power and exacerbating the divide between those who practice design and those who are impacted by it. This talk will explore how to cultivate conditions for collaboration that disrupt the status quo and allow for more relational design engagements, centering on reciprocity, capacity building, and mutual empowerment.

Speaker Bio

Sahibzada Mayed is a multidisciplinary creative who works across the realms of design, research, and strategy. Mayed is not just a designer but a storyteller, a provocateur, and a relentless advocate for equity, justice, and liberation. Their work embodies the radical critique needed to disrupt oppressive systems and the speculative dreaming that is necessary to imagine new worlds. Mayed is someone who is unafraid to challenge the status quo and bold enough to daringly envision radical possibilities through creative liberation.

Beyond Boundaries: Interweaving Design and Medical Research Paradigms Through Participatory Collaboration

My talk is about the collaboration between design and medical students and the creative methods used to explore Design and Medical Research Paradigms to facilitate Medical Students from to conduct Community Based Research.

Speaker Bio

Hi my name is Tirath and I am excited about presenting at SDNNCG for two reasons – Celebrating the spirit of collaboration and Service Design. This was captured by a recent experience when I got an opportunity to work alongside medical students. I realised that it is when we try collaborating with someone who sees things with a very different worldview that we learn most about ourselves. The project was instrumental in transcending boundaries of our fields and made my practice in Service Design invaluable through co-creative methods and holistic thinking. SDN NGC is a fantastic platform for budding designers such as myself to showcase our work and enhance our understanding of the field by connecting with like-minded as well as radically different people! When it comes to undertaking projects, I am usually the guy who stands beside the whiteboard connecting a hundred different dots and framing problems from all possible angles while at the same time engaging everyone around myself to think and question everything. My strength lie in thinking laterally and using my wicked sense of humour to spark creativity!

Applying a service design process to the realm of Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy (PAT)—a resurging field in the treatment of mental health conditions.

Speaker Bio

“Psychedelics, used responsibly and with proper caution, would be for psychiatry what the microscope is for biology and medicine or the telescope is for astronomy.” —Stanislav Grof. As a Strategic Designer, I'm excited about discussing how a design process can aid in managing the implementation of Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy (PAT) within the framework of Western medicine, ensuring it is delivered safely, ethically, and effectively. My research focuses on identifying the primary delivery challenges from the perspective of PAT therapists and the creation of a solution based on the gathered insights. I found this project to be a transformative experience, showcasing the power of collaboration and transversal thinking when tackling complex challenges. Also, it serves as inspiration, empowering us designers to reimagine the delivery of all mental health services.

Service Design draws heavily from ancient Greek Ethics and Aesthetics, beginning with the foundational theater metaphor that separates front stage from backstage. When Service Design engages with cultures that do not cultivate the Greek canon, the decolonization challenge comes to the fore. People who work to decolonize their cultures wonder whether Service Design will remain a tool for cultural imperialism or change to become a tool for autonomous development. This talk presents the author's effort to develop distinct Ethics and Aesthetics for Service Design to address corporate responsibility, work exploitation, workplace racism, and gender disparities in service codesign sessions. This work is primarily based on Pedagogy of the Oppressed and Theater of the Oppressed.

Speaker Bio

Dr. Frederick (Fred) van Amstel (he/him/his) is a tenured Associate Professor in the Design & Visual Communications program at the University of Florida. Dr. Van Amstel’s research and education address contradictions in design: why and how design projects face ethical dilemmas, trade-offs, and complexity. In recent years, the contradiction of oppression climbed to the top of his research agenda, mainly due to the ascension of far-right extremism. From 2019 to 2023, Frederick held the position of Assistant Professor at UTFPR, where he co founded the Design & Oppression network and its local hub at UTFPR: the Laboratory of Design against Oppression (LADO). From that position, he guest-edited two special issues of the Diseña Journal on Design, Oppression, and Liberation, hosted the international course Designs of the Oppressed, and organized the Theater of the Techno-Oppressed outreach activity.

Everyone’s career journey presents a unique story to tell. How can you communicate the value in your unique journey? Participants will engage in a brainstorm session to distill the key moments of their narrative, develop a framework to communicate that value, and feel equipped to define their own narrative.

Speaker Bio

I define myself as an empathetic problem solver dedicated to understanding people’s needs to identify opportunities for design and technology. I have a background in Industrial Design and Design Research. I was born and raised in Mexico. My willingness to pivot my career brought me to New York City, where in 2016 I completed a MFA in Transdisciplinary Design, at Parsons School of Design. After trying different industries and doing some internships I wanted to pursue a career in tech and six years ago, I joined IBM – where I’m currently a Service Designer in the Product Excellence Office as part of IBM Software. At IBM, I cross-collaborate with different disciplines to empower teams in creating world-class tech solutions for our users and future technologies. I love working in tech because it’s an ever-changing, challenging space where I feel empowered to make an impact and challenge the status quo of what our futures could look like.

In design, multiple perspectives matter. They help connect dots, and weave threads we hadn’t thought of before, bringing in the much needed nuances to creating differentiated value. In this talk, I want to share my experiences over my design career where I have had the opportunity to design many experiences across products and services, but the things that have always stayed were the stories and experiences of those projects and what we learnt from people. The interactions with various people, coming from different industries, with different backgrounds, and various motivations, all mostly focusing on just creating value for the users. This talk will tell you how as service designers you need to be able to have an eye on the big picture and focus on the details, look in multiple directions, to create the best experience.

Speaker Bio

Vinisha Halli is an award-winning service designer with 14+ years of experience in designing services and creating experiences for people. An architect and visual designer by education, she has built her proficiency in service design as she learnt it along the way by doing. She has designed services that are human centric and experience-led for technology platforms, large organisation employee experiences, mass rapid transport systems, narrative spaces, innovation hubs, in physical environments and digital spaces, that span various industries and domains. She is currently working with EY, creating value in various ways across the many sectors and working with multidisciplinary teams to bring a human centric approach to services and products. What drives Vinisha is always creating the best value for all the people involved and influenced by the service or product. She believes that perspective matters and that good design is honest.

About Jean Watanya, Fon Wareesa, & Prang Chutiwan - Workshop facilitators for "Creative Confidence: Discover The Art of Design Through Your Hobbies": We are a group of people who share the same interests in Service Design. Our journey started from the architecture school for undergrads then becoming classmates during MA Service Design at LCC. We're now working in different places and different roles, yet Service Design always brings us back together. We're interested in the topic about 'Hobbies' which we've failed and succeeded in. We are still learning, exploring, and iterating – which we have realised that life never stops learning.

Empowering Citizens: Designing Data Ownership Through Interdisciplinary Lens

04:30

-

04:45

EST

In our increasingly data-driven world, where information shapes economies and services, citizens play a pivotal role as both users and providers of data. However, their involvement in shaping this system often focuses solely on service enhancement, neglecting critical aspects of data privacy and ownership. This keynote seeks to demystify the paradox of data ownership and accessibility to services. Through the interdisciplinary lens of behavioral science, the speaker will explore users' emotional journeys in their daily digital activities, uncovering pain points and opportunities for empowerment. By employing speculative design and service design tools, she will illustrate how to craft cohesive future user journeys that advocate for citizen empowerment through data ownership. Furthermore, the speaker will also share some tips for recruiting participants in user research. The presentation will address the challenge of translating technical jargon and concepts into relatable narratives for diverse audiences, regardless of their technology background. How do we, as designers, effectively communicate complex ideas and engage multi-disciplinary audiences through powerful storytelling methods?

Speaker Bio

Ebby Lai is a service designer and strategist deeply passionate about systems thinking and transformation, particularly the symbiotic relationship between humans and technology in today's world. With extensive experience in driving business growth through digital transformation across Hong Kong and the UK, she has transitioned into service design within the public sector. Approaching her work with a curious and provocative mindset, Ebby aims to uncover meaningful insights while addressing real-world challenges. She excels in breaking down silos and unboxing opportunities within complex systems, such as financial services and consumer technology. Ebby's passion for speculative design, system thinking, and leveraging technology for good is evident in her successful track record of service design projects. Focused on enhancing accessibility, sustainability, and scalability, these projects demonstrate her commitment to shaping the future of service experiences through innovative design and systemic change.

Are grassroots non-profits considered service designers? Not really! Yet from 1982 when the word was coined, it was agreed that each business should have a ‘service blueprint’ – which shows how one process interacts with other processes. The business of human rights, gender and health equality / equity, is a process that interacts with other processes. We are in the business of changing lives and behaviours, through unknowing service design.

Speaker Bio

Wendo Aszed is the Founder and Executive Director of Dandelion Africa, a grassroots innovator in Kenya that focuses on women and girls sexual and reproductive health, economic livelihoods and advocacy on gender based violence through men engagement. She has over a decade of experience in grassroots sustainable programs and is rooted in community driven solutions. Through Dandelion, they have set up over 50 reproductive and maternal safe spaces, built 3 Health Centres, 2 Libraries. She has studied in different schools including Strathmore College, Executive Program for Nonprofit Leaders at Stanford University and Social Entrepreneurship at GSBI Accelerator at Santa Clara University in California. Wendo is an African Visionary Fellow, an Aspen New Voices Fellow 2019, awardee of the Kenya Presidential Award 2022, her work was recognized by Bill Gates through Gates Notes in 2022, Change Champion award by Population Matters 2021, and Rising Star awardee 2017 by Segal Family Foundation. She sits in multiple Boards both locally and Internationally and consults for Nonprofit philanthropists on localization and grassroot driven initiatives. I am excited about presenting because the work of Non-Profit leaders is not centered around design, but on the multi-dimensional challenges facing different communities. This is an opportunity to speak to the processes of how community solutions are addressed, how programs are designed by us, for us who live in rural areas.

Reimagining Design for an Uncertain Future

04:30

04:45

EST

The world is currently undergoing some tough and extremely complex social and environmental challenges - so how might we, as designers, adapt the way we do design to meet them head on? Join Design Strategist Finlay Stevens-Hunt on a workshop adventure to explore what these potential futures might actually look like and what potential opportunities for design might be uncovered. As a participant, you will learn practical skills to reimagine how your design career may unfold to meet an uncertain future along with the means to critically assess design future imaginaries proposed by others.

Speaker Bio

Finlay Stevens-Hunt is a Design Strategist with 10+ years of international experience in visual and experiential software design. Aside from his commercial work, he is actively contributing to the discourse of design led futures through his articles, helping run the UX Auckland community and participating in local communities building ecological resilience. He believes strongly in the power of design and designers to bring about positive outcomes in an otherwise uncertain ecological future, however first, we need to pivot from human centric design to eco centric design. I am very humbled at the opportunity to help empower emerging designers to do good for the world. The future will be a very different place, filled with complex challenges beyond what we know how to deal with today as a society, and hence it is our role as a design community to step up and show the way forward. This is what I mean by a design led future. But first we need to understand what this future might potentially look like and what opportunities might there be for designers to make a meaningful impact. I hope to enable participants to reclaim their agency around what a design career might look like for them moving into this uncertain future. If we continue to just leave it to corporate interests, then we probably won't be working on the challenges that really make a difference.

During the talk we will discuss some directions where research operations are intersecting with the application of generative AI. We are now seeing the rising need for designers and researchers to get acquainted with tools and technologies that can support their practice in multiple ways. Since the increase of availability of AI tools, there has been an ongoing discussion on the role such technology could (and should) have within the field. After a general introduction of the topic we will focus on the implications that AI may have on the everyday work of a researcher from 3 different perspectives: practical, ethical and business-related. The session will be organized as an open conversations during which we’ll share our thoughts and experiences to build up some possible answers to this challenge.

This speech will focus on shifting from a past emphasis on quantitative group travel and stacking travel components in product design to reexamining the qualitative design of the traveller service experience. How did cross-functional teams spanning over 10 different departments across the entire group, with backgrounds not primarily in service design, utilize service design methodologies to transform travel services from mere client escorting to genuine customer-centric experiences? We will delve into the relationship between service and design, and through a specific case study—the "Breezy Blue" initiative—we'll illustrate how a traditional travel agency, heavily impacted by the pandemic, utilized service design to bring about a fresh operational mindset and customer-centric service experience design, revolutionizing the travel industry.

Orchestrating a 360 Degree Experience in Collaboration With Musicians!

In this talk, Nikoo will share her experience of turning an “oh, thank you for your performance!” to an “It’s been a week that the song is circling in my head, and I am thinking of its meaning in my life!”. Nikoo will share how working with experts from other disciplines, with no background in design, helped all of them to create a 360-degree, holistic experience for not only the audience but for the experts as well. This is what makes a service! This case study shows how a service designer should be willing to embrace a journey of her/his own to better design a journey for the customers and stakeholders. When the designer understands how to comprehend know-hows of other industries, it would not add to the complexity of the problem, as it will lead to identifying the right problem! Nikoo will demonstrate how she, alongside musicians, created an orchestration to make a cultural package, a journey, a path, that was far more than just songs!

Speaker Bio

Nikoo is a Service Design Consultant who strives for co-creating noble services and experiences. By benefiting from her background as a business consultant, her takeaways of cognitive science and neuropsychology, and her passion for arts, she has a unique point of view which results in life-centered services. Being a co-founder of Lean Design Agency for 5 years, gave her the opportunity to get engaged with teams and organizations in fourteen industries to innovate and improve the output of technical endeavors. Nikoo is now a service designer whose attempts for helping businesses outgrows the geographical borders.

I am a Service designer, currently working on improving and creating omni-channel experiences for the central consumer facing products while being involved with other research projects inside the organization. My journey hasn’t been quite linear, I dabbled on my way with many things to reach this point starting from engineering to design. After pursuing masters in Politecnico Di Milano, I immediately started with research and innovation in BMW which eventually led to Deutsche telekom. Its all about making the difference for me, strongly based on the value system. I adhere to the principle that design can influence for good or bad, depending on us how we forge ahead.

Harnessing Data in Service Design

04:30

In today's data-driven world, the ability to interpret and analyze qualitative data but also quantitative data is becoming increasingly essential for designers. It is crucial that we understand how to leverage this information to continually assess and measure in order to make data-informed decisions aligned with business goals. This not only enhances one's credibility but also provides a natural connection point across multidisciplinary teams. In any organization, access in data literacy can provide valuable insights into how these systems are currently functioning, what areas need improvement, and the impact these data points have on the overall service experience. Additionally, building a data-informed business case can validate assumptions and support design decisions, providing a more evidence-based approach to design. In this workshop, we will explore the importance of advanced quantitative data skills and you will learn tangible ways to integrate these practices into your design process.

Speaker Bio

Paige Roche is a Service Design Lead at Slalom and co-leads their Service Design Center of Excellence team. Paige's expertise in systems thinking, mixed-methods research, and organizational design enables her to effectively analyze various data points and provide strategic direction aligned with business-driven outcomes. Paige has worked for a wide range of clients in financial services, public sector, social impact, logistics, and healthcare. Paige actively supports the SDN, North American Global Community Team with a passion to enhance ongoing learning and foster community and connection among service designers globally.
